| Killing "Extra" Bears—Why, Wyoming? Bonnie Rice, the Sierra Club's point person for the Greater Yellowstone/Northern Rockies region, was one of many who testified before the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission against against the state's plan to allow two dozen grizzly bears in the Yellowstone region to be killed in a trophy hunt this fall. When questioned repeatedly why the state is rushing to initiate a hunt so soon after endangered species protections were removed last summer, the commissioners replied that there was no need for "extra" bears. They then voted unanimously to allow the trophy hunt. Do-It Pruitt Planning a luxury vacation? In the market for a new home? Do-it Pruitt is your one-stop shop for outrageous pay-to-play deals. Lotion That Won't Harm the Ocean Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays is essential, but research shows that 90 percent of sunscreens take a serious toll on the environment by contributing to the bleaching of coral reefs. So how do you find lotion that won't harm the ocean? Study the label and look for this reef-safe ingredient. Photo by Barry Morenz Sorry, Donald, Coal Isn't Coming Back In a world where clean energy keeps winning, President Trump continues to keep his head in the sand—or, rather, in the coal dust. He recently tweeted yet again about "beautiful clean coal." Sierra Club Beyond Coal campaign director Mary Anne Hitt's pithy response: "lol, nope!" Here's how Hitt knows that coal can't beat clean energy. Is the Buzz About Honeybees Hurting Wild Pollinators? "Save the bees" is a rallying cry we've been hearing for years now. But commerical honeybees are at no risk of extinction. Meanwhile, native bees—of which there are over 20,000 species varying in size, shape, and color—are experiencing devastating losses, with some species already considered extinct. Learn more about the plight of wild pollinators and what it portends for crops like tomatoes. Two Ways to Really Get Greener Recycling, composting, switching to LED bulbs—we all have options, big and small, for making our households greener. Not sure where to start or what will make the biggest difference? Mr. Green recommends focusing on two things first. Way, Way, Way Before Instagram Ninety years ago, the Sierra Club organized its annual summer mountaineering trip—to the Canadian Rockies that year. The trip leader, William Colby, who served for 49 years as a Club director, invited a young photographer named Ansel Adams to come along as the "official" photographer. After the trip, Adams compiled his 34 best shots (along with 16 from other participants) into a special portfolio that was presented to Colby and now resides in the Sierra Club's William E. Colby Memorial Library. It's the only known copy. Browse the rare Ansel Adams 1928 High Trip photo album. On the Way to Drawbridge Peak by Ansel Adams Ready for the Ultimate Summer Outdoor Challenge? Feed Your Head Some Nature Studies show that getting outside keeps your mind healthy and relaxed. In fact, doctors are among the most strident advocates of the good old-fashioned nature prescription. Sierra magazine looked into studies that demonstrate the real connection between time spent in the great outdoors and mental well-being. Here's how you can channel it to your benefit. Free Siwatu In Detroit, mother and environmental justice organizer Siwatu-Salama Ra has been victimized by an inhumane justice system that has separated the pregnant African American activist from her family. Communities of color in Michigan disproportionately face the myriad injustices of concentrated pollution, systematic inequities, and a racist legal system. Watch our video about Siwatu's story and how you can help. Fix the Broken Pipeline Policy Interstate gas pipelines break frequently, but the process for reviewing and approving them is downright broken. The current policy dates back to 1999 and is out of touch with the science and economics of the climate crisis. The result: too many dangerous and unnecessary gas pipelines. Now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has announced that it will reconsider this outdated policy. Tell FERC we need a 21st-century approach that rigorously evaluates whether these gas pipelines are in the public interest. Final Days to Defend the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge For more than 40 years, we've worked to protect the Arctic Refuge from corporate greed. Now the Trump administration is rushing to open it up to Big Oil. The Bureau of Land Management has already begun its environmental review process, and we have only until June 19 to add comments calling for protection of the refuge. This process would normally require years of environmental review, public input, and consultations with tribes, but Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke are hurrying to get drills in the ground before a new administration can reverse their decision to drill in America's last great wilderness. Add your comment today and let the BLM know that drilling should never be allowed in this special place.
