Botched facelift: Art restoration goes south in Spain

Spain is one of the world’s most famous art hubs, but it seems like residents are having trouble restoring older works. A few years ago, Borja’s famous Ecce Homo fresco was mocked online after an 80-year-old woman accidentally blurred the face beyond recognition. And now, a sculpture in the city of Palencia has been altered in a similarly tragic way.

The statue’s face, which originally looked like a woman laughing, now looks like a Mr. Potato head. The statue's lips look like a ring of spaghetti, and the face is now smooth and featureless. The eyes, which now look like two holes, are completely off-center. To make matters worse, nobody is claiming responsibility. We can’t imagine why. At least art restoration jobs in France appear to be going well.
