On Common Ground: Economic Inequality & the Housing Crisis

It’s not news anymore: the Bay Area has a housing crisis in need of urgent action. A housing shortage, plus rising rents and stagnant wages, are leaving more and more people vulnerable to homelessness. The crisis has prompted leaders from every sector--private companies, philanthropy, government, think tanks and community organizations--to design proposals, sponsor bills and launch coalitions for tackling the issue. Can these solutions outpace the problem, and the income inequality at its core?

Co-presented by KQED and SPUR, this event brings together Fred Blackwell, Karen Chapple, Sarah Karlinsky, and host Mina Kim to discuss the complexities of the housing crisis, the proposed solutions, the legacy of Prop 13, and more.

Documentary Filmmakers Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein: College Behind Bars

For 30 years, Lynn Novick has been directing and producing landmark documentary films about American culture, history, politics, sports, art and music, alongside co-director Ken Burns. Her new documentary series, College Behind Bars, reveals the transformative power of higher education through the experiences of men and women trying to earn college degrees while incarcerated. Executive produced by Ken Burns and produced by Sarah Botstein, College Behind Bars is Novick’s solo directorial debut and will premiere on KQED Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26 at 9pm.

Here’s a chance to get a preview of the PBS series and hear a discussion with the filmmakers and formerly incarcerated students featured in the film about the power of education to transform lives and benefit society at large.
