Dollar stores are facing new restrictions in Chicago following the approval of a city ordinance restricting dollar stores from opening within a mile of pre-existing locations.

So we asked:
Are we going to see more cities placing restrictions on dollar stores?

And you answered:

  • No, that's not the right move (55%)
  • Yes, they are blight (43%)
  • Other, tell us in the comments (2%)

I don't see them as an issue, if there is a market and need what is the problem? What's next, too many pharmacies close to each other? Let the market decide what's too many especially since these stores offer jobs and growth to the area. Politicians and local ordinances are the blight.

Donald King
The issue isn’t dollar stores per se, but the fact that most wind up being in some inner cities. Dollar stores stock a limited amount of merchandise. Politicians want them to be full grocery stores, regardless of if they are profitable.
