We know that The House of Bernarda Alba was Lorca’s last work for the theatre. And now we are looking at the first operatic version in Spanish. Miquel Ortega, its composer, wrote it between 1991 and 2006, and the libretto is based virtually entirely on the original text. The author of the text, Julio Ramos, removed just a few scenes, changed certain sentences and took out secondary characters.
Ortega’s opera was finally premièred, in its symphonic version, at the Brasov Theatre in Rumania, on December 13, 2007. It was premièred in Spain two years later, at the Santander and Perelada festivals. And now it is going to be premièred in its chamber orchestra version.
In his Bernarda Alba, Ortega recovers the hold tonality has on the operatic genre, to avoid the death of opera and its distancing from audiences. Of particular note are the dialogues, with short sentences and forceful replies, without falling into the trap of banality. The work places great stress on criticism of a society with double standards, where obsession with religion, false appearances, hypocrisy and virginity are reflected in each one of the moments of the work. It also deals clearly and forcefully with the hierarchisation of society. This society is inhabited by the rural female universe, as something which is claustrophobic, suffocating and frustrating.
Joining this production are figures from le grand spectacle such as Ezio Frigerio, Franca Squarciapino and Vinicio Cheli, as well as a splendid cast of voices which will enable us to see the flesh and blood of those women.
A work which strengthens the validity of Lorca in this day and age. Its contemporaneity reminds us that with the passing of the years, the poet from Granada has become one of the great legends of the 20th century.
