Labor Day to mark test in return to office

A number of large firms have said they expect staffers to return to offices at least several days a week after Labor Day, after a similar initiative last year was upended by a fresh coronavirus outbreak. Surveys indicate workers prefer the more flexible hybrid arrangements and will be reluctant to abandon them.

Labor Department data showed that new applications for US jobless benefits decreased slightly to 250,000 last week. Claims have remained at approximately this level since hitting a mid-July high for the year. "We are starting to see demand for labor weaken," commented Sarah House, a Wells Fargo senior economist.

Faculty from three highly regarded private universities recently detailed research that showed white employees are better equipped to recognize privilege in the workplace after having acknowledged their own disadvantages. They suggest that trained facilitators might be best for businesses looking to help examining these issues, since approaching them the wrong way could backfire.

World's thinnest tower designed with sway in mind

At 1,428 feet high, the Steinway Tower is only the second-tallest residential tower in New York City but it's definitely the skinniest, with a world-record width-to-height ratio of 1 to 23½.  You might wonder how such a tower remains stable. The Associated Press explains the tower has tuned steel plates to prevent excessive sway and a textured terracotta and bronze facade to slow the acceleration of the building. Its deep foundation also helps.
