Skilled trades such as electrical and machining work, plus health care, manufacturing, sales and math-focused jobs, are at high risk for labor shortages, a recent report predicts. The report suggests that a labor shortage will disproportionately affect some traditional industries in the next 10 years.

The number of Americans age 55 and older getting aesthetic procedures rose from 3.3 million in 2013 to 3.9 million in 2015, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the increase was 352% from 1997 to 2013 for people age 65 and older, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Older Americans still competing in the job market want to look fresh and vibrant, plastic surgeon Julio Garcia said.

Businesses can save money by granting employee requests for flexible work schedules, and prospective employees who need a flexible schedule should not settle for a lower salary in return, says Katie Donovan with Equal Pay Negotiations. Commissions, extra vacation time, retirement plan matching and excellent health benefits might be valid trade-offs for a lower salary, Donovan says.

Productivity is too often cast as a search for the universal process rather than something that's individual and variable. "The body has a number of cycles, circadian rhythms, and you want to train your body to take maximum advantage of those," says Daniel Levitin, professor of behavioral neuroscience at McGill University.
