Lawmakers prepare to take on Jeff Landry's wide-ranging tax proposals

Telling state lawmakers he does not want to "pass the buck one more time," Gov. Jeff Landry made his pitch Wednesday for them to approve his aggressive plan to rewrite Louisiana’s tax system. The Legislature kicked off a 19-day special session during which they will address a plethora of tax issues.

Senate President Cameron Henry, R-Metairie, wants more details about the costs of the governor's plan. “I still don’t think there’s a consensus on what members are in favor of or are not in favor of,” Henry said.

Tuesday's election results went against what pollsters and local political watchers had been pitching for weeks, as high school football coach and political newcomer Sid Edwards came out on top in the primary and advanced to a December runoff with incumbent Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, who is seeking a third term.

Recent polling appeared to show the campaign of Democrat challenger Ted James was surging, but he finished out of the money in third.
