Landslide red tags homes By Heather McRea | This week in Coast Lines: Four oceanfront apartment buildings in San Clemente have been red tagged after a landslide. Plus, a Long Beach lifeguard rescues a really lost pooch, and a whale made pretty good time cruising past Newport Beach despite having lost its tail. Here’s what’s happening along the Southern California coast. |

| Threatened homes "It’s just too much rain," said Clayton Robinson, standing outside the San Clemente apartment building he owns with his wife, one of four red-tagged after a landslide. "At some point, if the hill underneath is too soft, the whole thing can’t hold it." With an earth-shaking crash about 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the hillside above the city’s popular beach path gave way, taking the back deck of a building with it. By mid-day four buildings had been red-tagged out of concern, but no one was hurt in the slide. Unsure when residents might be able to return home, Mayor Chris Duncan said, "When you think about the soil loss under these heavy concrete backyard patios, they can take not only the patio but the entire structure with them." Dogged rescue A little white dog lost at the beach got itself in … well it’s winter, so cold water … when it started swimming out to sea. So a Long Beach lifeguard grabbed his rescue board and headed out after the lap dog, who seemed to confuse what we mean by lap. The little dog had made it all the way to the swim line. The Fire Department later posted that dog and owner were reunited. Read the story. |

| Tale of adversity It appears, an expert said, entangled lines wrapped so tightly around a whale’s tale, it ultimately fell off. Check out video of how the whale with no tail spotted off Newport Beach has adjusted its swimming to make due. But whales use their tails to swim thousands of miles in migration each season and dive deep in the ocean for food, an expert said. How long can this one last? Read the story. |
