Noting that generative AI is “probably” the most important new computer technology ever, Oracle’s Larry Ellison explained how the company is embedding GenAI into its vast portfolio of cloud services, with the aim of helping customers and society at large tackle their most vexing problems. Speaking at Oracle CloudWorld, Ellison said Oracle is best positioned among cloud providers to help companies develop GenAI models because its second-generation cloud uses ultrafast remote data memory access networking and connects NVIDIA GPUs in huge superclusters. This approach can efficiently train GenAI models at twice the speed of other clouds and at less than half the cost. OCI’s speed and cost advantages are why companies such as Cohere, NVIDIA, and X.AI are using it to train their large language models. He added that Oracle intends this new technology to help solve some of humanity’s most intractable problems, including healthcare challenges, food insecurity, and climate change. For example, Ellison described AI-supported greenhouses that can help growers use 98% less water and 90% less land, which are crucial considerations at a time of significant climate disruption. “It's a modern approach to an industry that's 10,000 years old,” Ellison said.
