Film and literature, the best of bedfellows. Each year, we work to put together books-become-movies, movies-beloved-by-authors, author-penned-movies, and all kinds of movie-lit business. Our 2024 Festival is no different. Upcoming October offerings below:

Poet and novelist Kaveh Akbar (Martyr!) will discuss Abbas Kiarostami's 1987 film Where Is the Friend's House? in conversation with Kiasostami's son and Roxie board member, Ahmad Kiasostami. $16

Robert Mailer Anderson
 (My Fairy Godfather) and Peter Hoey (In Perpetuity) will discuss their latest film-rooted graphic novels with CCA's Justin Hall. Bookended by two of Anderson’s films: Windows on the World (which directly inspired Anderson’s first graphic novel) and Pig Hunt for only $20!

Shortcomings Screening and Q&A with Adrian Tomine

Adapted by Adrian Tomine from his own graphic novel, directed by Randall Park, and filmed in part in Berkeley—Shortcomings is, among other things, a love letter to the movies. Followed by a conversation between Tomine and Andrew Farago, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum. $15–20 suggested donation


Une Famille (A Family) Screening and Q&A with Screenwriter/Director Christine Angot

Novelist, screenwriter, and director Christine Angot joins Zoë Elton, artistic director for the Mill Valley Film Festival, to present a special screening of Angot's radical and powerful documentary examining the rarely discussed topic of incest as it follows Angot, who, unplanned, begins confronting family members and friends about the abuse she endured as a teenager at the hands of her father. $15

Porchlight Storytelling: Touched by an Angel

Generation Women: Plot Twists
