EARLY DETECTION AND DIAGNOSIS NEWSLETTER Hi Voornaam, Welcome to your autumn Early Detection and Diagnosis newsletter. I hope you’re doing well and had time to rest over the summer holidays. We’re excited to be back – we have busy months ahead with lots of great activities planned. This October, we are looking forward to seeing many of you in person at the Early Detection of Cancer Conference in Portland. The speaker line up this year features many outstanding researchers and early detection leaders from around the world, including Jos Jonkers, Wendy Garrett, Usha Menon and Rob West. Don’t miss out – we have a few discounted tickets left and registration closes on 7 October. A key part of our work is to listen to our research community, and we’ve become aware there’s a perception that Cancer Research UK isn’t engaged in funding behavioural research. The Early Detection and Diagnosis Research Committee and the Prevention and Population Research Committee both receive fewer applications from behavioural scientists compared to other research areas, such as epidemiology or biomarker validation. We’ve a keen interest in changing this, and helping behavioural scientists submit more high-quality applications, with a better chance of successfully securing funding from us. This autumn, we're supporting behavioural science researchers in prevention, early detection and diagnosis with two new initiatives – read on to find out more. Kind Regards, David Crosby Head of Prevention and Early Detection Research Cancer Research UK |

| A COMING TOGETHER OF MINDS FOR EARLY DETECTION “Part of the challenge of detection is knowing where, or in this case, in whom, to look for cancers.” This is only one of the thought-provoking issues of early detection research we discussed with our Research Programme Manager, Dr Alexis Webb, in our recent research feature. The momentum is changing for early detection research and collaboration is more important than ever – check out our conversation to learn why. |

SUPPORT FOR BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE RESEARCH IN PREVENTION, EARLY DETECTION, AND DIAGNOSIS Are you a behavioural scientist considering submitting an application to our Prevention and Population Research or Early Detection and Diagnosis Research Committee? We’re here to support you with two new initiatives. This autumn, we’ll be partnering with the NCRI to provide a bespoke Proposal Guidance Meeting for any proposals using behavioural science approaches ahead of our application deadlines in spring 2023. We’re also organising a dedicated webinar, featuring members from both funding committees and behavioural researchers who have secured CRUK funding – we’ll confirm the date shortly. |

| NEW PAPER IN NATURE CANCER How could cfDNA methylome profiling be used for the detection and subtyping of small cell lung cancers? That’s what Professor Caroline Dive from the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute explored in an excellent article recently published in Nature Cancer. Dive and her team describe a rapid turnaround, non-invasive liquid biopsy approach for the detection of stage I–IV small cell lung cancer using patients’ circulating cell-free DNA. In addition to providing underlying biological insights, genome-wide DNA methylation profiling could be used for better molecular characterisation of cancer subtypes, enabling the development of personalised treatments. |

Join us for the Cancer Research UK Lung Cancer Conference where our Research Programme Manager, Dr Alexis Webb and Christine Berg (US National Institutes of Health, retired) will discuss the transformative stage shift underway in the early detection of lung cancer. Taking place in Manchester on 15–17 November 2022, our Lung Cancer Conference aims to break down barriers between disciplines and open up new avenues for collaborative research in cancer cell biology, cutting-edge drug discovery and novel approaches to the detection, monitoring and treatment of lung cancer. |
