Weekly Roundup: Legal Considerations

Featured content: Managed care organizations can be held liable for physicians' care

Legal cases have significantly affected how health plans operate with regard to their credentialing practices. There are several ways in which managed care organizations can be held liable for their actions or for the actions of their providers related to the care received by members.

Leadership insights: Newly-trained physicians in high demand

Demand for medical doctors is so high that half of new doctors report receiving 100 or more job offers during training, according to a survey by Merritt Hawkins.

The Dallas-based physician search firm surveyed 926 MDs in their final year of residency and asked them about their career plans and expectations. Seventy percent of the new doctors said they received 50 or more job solicitations, while 50% said they received 100 or more solicitations.

Free resource: Sample applicant attestation, consent, and release from liability

A key part to any credentialing application is the attestation, acknowledgment, and release forms. These documents protect your organization as well as the entities that release information to your organization throughout the credentialing process.

Quick tip: Comply with EMTALA

Compared to a tertiary hospital, resources can be tight and clinical expertise narrowly concentrated in a scaled-down facility, such as a microhospital.

Endovenous laser treatment - Procedure 215

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), also called endovenous laser ablation, is a minimally invasive procedure involving the use of a highly concentrated laser to repair varicose veins. Typically found in the legs, these gnarled, enlarged veins are caused by a faulty valve or weak vein wall. Although primarily a cosmetic concern for many people, varicose veins bulge and block blood flow, which can cause discomfort and lead to larger health problems (such as eczema, pigmentation, ulceration, and bleeding) if proper blood flow is not restored.
