“I just wanted to write and say what a wonderful thing it is to have all your courses available freely.

I'm an independent learner. I found this facility after trying to find courses in economics and politics, after being told one too many times that I was an idealist who had no idea about the real world. I wanted a way of being able to backup my ideas with academic theory.

Education should be free and available to the world. No one should be disadvantaged due to this and I applaud you for being that idea in the world. Thank you."

-Samantha, Independent Learner, United Kingdom
Dear John,

Free and available to the world - this is OCW. And this is our commitment to you.

Please consider demonstrating your support by participating in our spring fundraising campaign and donating today.

We have two days left in our campaign and we need 237 OCW learners to give to help us reach our goal. A donation in any amount makes a difference.

We appreciate all of the folks who have supported us this far and have allowed us to count on you. If you’ve already donated, then thank you for joining our growing community of supporters.

Sincerely,
Krishna

Understanding the past to prepare for the future

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “I believe that the more you know about the past, the better you are prepared for the future.”

At MIT, the study of History teaches different ways to think critically about the past, present and future of the world. Students develop a rich, empathetic understanding of the people, events, and circumstances that ultimately prepares them to be active members of their local communities and an increasingly global society today.

Tailored to put the modern world in historical perspective, MIT History subjects explore the social, cultural, economic, and political transformations that shape the present.

On OCW, you can browse lists of courses on 17 History subtopics:
