Birth of a Family, From Up North screen at Royal Saskatchewan Museum as part of National Indigenous History Month

Two films from NSI grads screen at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum next month as part of National Indigenous History Month.

Birth of a Family by Tasha Hubbard screens on June 5. Betty Ann Adam whose Sixties Scoop family reunion is featured in the film will be in attendance.

NSI IndigiDocs short From Up North (pictured) by Trudy Stewart and Janine Windolph screens on June 7. The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Trudy, Janine and Noel Starblanket who is featured in the film.

Admission is by donation.

16 NSI alumni selected for inaugural Banff Diversity of Voices Initiative

Congratulations to the NSI grads selected for the inaugural Diversity of Voices Initiative run by Banff World Media Festival in partnership with the Canada Media Fund – Fonds des médias du Canada (CMF/FMC), the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and Canada’s Indigenous Screen Office.

Diversity of Voices gives ​Francophone, Indigenous and women ​producers the opportunity to attend the Banff World Media Festival and access to bespoke training and networking opportunities with key industry decision makers.

In addition, 25 of this year’s applicants will also participate in the Diversity of Voices Pitch Program where they’ll receive individual mentorship from media leaders and the opportunity to take private pitch meetings with international buyers at the festival.

Ryan Wilson selected for Manitoba feature film screenwriter accelerator program

Congratulations to Ryan Wilson (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) who is one of five Manitoba screenwriters selected to participate in a feature film accelerator program funded through Manitoba Film & Music (MFM) and On Screen Manitoba (OSM).

The program provides writers with creative mentorship and story editing through Script Angel, a UK-based screenwriting consultation company. The writers receive feedback on existing scripts for up to three rewrites over a six month period.

NSI’s Shelly Quade heads to PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp 2018

Shelly Quade, NSI Features First program manager, will be in Charlottetown for the PEI Screenwriters Bootcamp from May 21 to 23.

Hosted by FilmPEI, PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp brings together emerging screenwriters and producers from Atlantic Canada for intensive professional development and networking activities. See the full schedule.

Shelly will present a session about the National Screen Institute with special guests and NSI Features First alumni Jason Arsenault and Adam Perry from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23 and is available for one-on-one meetings throughout the boot camp.

She’ll also be part of a $5K pitch panel (Pitch for Your Life) on Wednesday.

Create an intro video for ACTRA Manitoba’s awards gala

ACTRA Manitoba is looking for a Winnipeg filmmaker (or filmmaking team) to produce an intro video to be screened at their 2018 awards gala. They will provide up to $3K in expenses and in-kind donations for equipment rental. The video must be completed by September 14, 2018.

The video will be two- to five-minutes long. It’s ACTRA Manitoba’s 60th anniversary and ACTRA National’s 70th. Preference may be given to pitches which reflect this.

The recipient must be willing to work with ACTRA on the project. As your client, ACTRA Manitoba must have say in the final content of the project (within reason). You are free to use the completed video (as your product) for festival submissions.

If you’re interested in working with ACTRA, send a one- to three-paragraph pitch to manitoba@actra.ca by June 4. Applicants will be notified by June 18.
