Films from NSI grads at Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival

Previously we wrote about CBC New Indigenous Voices short Forgotten screening at Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival. We’re thrilled to report there are other films made through NSI programs also screening at the fest.

The Asinabka Festival aims to highlight works that examine Indigenous issues and topics. It runs August 8 to 12 in Ottawa.

Four new films in this week’s NSI Online Short Film Festival from directors Michael Clowater, Rueben Tschetter, Jesse Gotfrit and Jesse Lupini.

Four Eyes

Brian is 11 years old and failing socially in his neighbourhood.

In 1977, being slightly on the autistic spectrum just means you’re weird and a target. He is repeatedly beat up and abused by a bully. Meanwhile his mother, Helen, doesn’t fit into her role of housewife and mother either as she struggles with the stresses of being at home and raising three kids completely on her own.

As the two stories come together, Helen finds herself by helping her son stand up for himself in the only way that makes sense to her. Regardless of what ‘proper’ society thinks of it.

We’re accepting films through FilmFreeway until Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

If your film is programmed, you have a chance of winning the A&E Short Filmmakers Award for best film. We accept films released after January 1, 2013.

All NSI Online Short Film Festival winners receive a complimentary Friend membership for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and are qualified to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award (if award criteria are met).

Your film must be less than 30 mins long. Drama, comedy, animation, documentary, sci-fi, horror, music video and experimental are all eligible and must be made by a Canadian writer, director or producer.
