Thirty-five years ago, Bruce Beach started construction on the Ark Two, an underground nuclear fallout shelter he designed and built himself. The structure is made up of 42 school buses linked together and buried under 12 feet of concrete and earth.

Over the years, the project has attracted the attention of people across the world and has been met with differing opinions – from other ‘preppers’ who celebrate it, to folks who think the whole idea is crazy.

You Will Survive Doomsday is a short documentary exploring the beliefs and decisions that shaped Bruce’s unconventional journey.

Call for films / submit by September 3

We’re accepting films through FilmFreeway until Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Films chosen during this call period will premiere in the NSI Online Short Film Festival between September 16 and December 2, 2019. Films must play for a minimum of three months after their premiere date.

We accept films released after January 1, 2014. If your film is programmed, you have a chance of winning the $1,250 A&E Short Filmmakers Award for best film.

All NSI Online Short Film Festival winners receive a complimentary Friend membership for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and are qualified to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award (if award criteria are met).

Your film must be less than 30 mins. Drama, comedy, animation, documentary, sci-fi, horror, music video and experimental are all eligible and must be made by a Canadian writer, director or producer.

The NSI Online Short Film Festival is a year-round Canadian short film showcase with new films added every week. Since launching in 2008, the festival has programmed hundreds of films and awarded over $125K to Canadian media artists. Many of the films are available to watch in the archives.

NSI alumni Geoff Redknap (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Features First) and Lisa Jackson (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) have been announced as participants of the 2019 TIFF Filmmaker Lab, running in Toronto from September 4 to 7.

TIFF Filmmaker Lab brings together 10 Canadian and 10 international directors during the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Over four-days, participants learn from internationally acclaimed filmmakers and guests, deepening their industry understanding and empowering them to move forward with their projects.

Giltrude’s Dwelling, a short film from director Jeremy Lutter (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Features First), took home the award for best sci-fi/fantasy film at Reno’s Cordillera Film Festival last month.

Orphaned at the age of 11, Giltrude, an interdimensional shut-in, has waited 15 years for her parents to come home. When a life or death dilemma comes knocking, Giltrude must look beyond her front door and learn to face the outside universe.

Director Danis Goulet (NSI Drama Prize) seeks an associate producer for her latest film project Night Raiders. First Nation, Métis and Inuit applicants are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be residents of Ontario and able to be Toronto-based for the duration of the position. There is potential funding available for travel and accommodation for an out-of-Toronto candidate.

Night Raiders is a Canadian sci-fi feature film that will shoot in Ontario and Manitoba in fall 2019. The film is written and directed by Danis Goulet, a Saskatchewan-born Cree/Métis filmmaker whose shorts include the award-winning Wakening and Barefoot.
