NSI celebrates 35 years of supporting storytellers and amplifying voices Posted: 07 Apr 2021 12:25 PM PDT Happy 35th birthday to the National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI)! Today, as we celebrate our 35th birthday, we are reminded of where NSI started and are hopeful about where we are headed. We are proud to further the mandate that has been set out since the beginning: to provide hands-on training and personalized mentorship in support of screen-based storytellers who exist outside the mainstream by acknowledging and removing barriers. Although our mandate remains the same, as the world around us grows and changes so must NSI. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged us to press pause and reassess who we are, what we do and how we can do better. Over the past 12 months, NSI staff and board redeveloped courses, offered new programs and created a new strategic plan. During our strategic planning discussions, we updated our vision, mission and values to solidify a period of transformative change. To celebrate our 35th birthday, we are excited to share our new vision, mission and value statements with you. Each statement gives clarity and purpose to our mandate. VisionStorytellers create a culturally equitable world. MissionThrough inclusive, customized training and mentorship, NSI supports creators to change the world through the power of story. ValuesThe following values guide the work we do at NSI. S-U-P-P-O-R-T Space to encourage learning and growth: We believe every storyteller should be given the space to learn, grow, and make mistakes in a supportive and safe environment. Underrepresented voices matter: NSI is committed to training participants from a diverse community of voices including Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+), people with disabilities, those outside large urban centres, those from regional and remote areas and various religious groups. Passionate about stories: Stories have the power to change the world. Power in partnerships: We recognize the power in partnerships to build bridges and foster growth, success and development. Others drive us to serve: We work in service of others and commit to doing so with honesty, integrity and a drive to do better. Responsive to market trends: We are responsive to and in tune with domestic and international market trends to deliver relevant, market-driven programs. Training that’s accessible: We provide accessible, world-class training to storytellers who represent true creative diversity through gender, race, ethnicity, geography and experience. Download our vision, mission and value statements. These values, along with our 2021-2023 strategic plan and new brand identity (coming later this year), mark a rebirth for NSI. Programs beloved by our alumni will make a comeback, along with new initiatives to strengthen the global success of Canadian storytellers. As we seek greater representation among storytellers, we commit to take these next steps with honesty, integrity and accountability so everyone, everywhere can see a reflection of themselves in the stories that are told.
