Alyson Richards, Pat Mills working on new NSI Features First thriller The Retreat

Writer Alyson Richards (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Features First) and director Pat Mills (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Totally Television, NSI Features First, NSI Script to Screen) have teamed up to work on new thriller The Retreat, developed through NSI Features First in 2008.

In the film a lesbian couple with a rocky relationship go to a friend’s pre-wedding retreat and end up fighting for their lives when a group of militant serial killers tries to murder them.

The Retreat is set to star Tommie-Amber Pirie (Bitten), Sarah Allen (Remedy), Rossif Sutherland (Reign) and Aaron Ashmore (Killjoys)

Marie Clements’ Red Snow wins at LA Skins Fest

Red Snow by director Marie Clements (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program, NSI Storytellers) recently won the Best Achievement in Film Award at LA Skins Fest in Los Angeles.

It’s been a busy fall for Marie. She picked up a best director award at the American Indian Film Festival, most popular Canadian feature at Vancouver International Film Festival and the jury award for best Canadian feature (dramatic) at Edmonton International Film Festival.

In Red Snow, a Giwch’in soldier from the Canadian Arctic is caught in an ambush in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His capture and interrogation by a Taliban Commander releases a cache of memories connected to the love and death of his Inuit cousin and binds him closer to a Pashtun family as they escape across treacherous landscapes and through a blizzard that becomes their key to survival.

NSI Features First film Hunter Hunter in post-production

NSI Features First-developed film Hunter Hunter by writer/director Shawn Linden is currently in post-production.

Shot in Winnipeg, the film includes many NSI alumni as crew members: Darren Wall (NSI Features First) is visual effects supervisor; Roger Boyer (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs, NSI Storytellers) is assistant production coordinator; Ryan Cooper (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) is second assistant director; BJ Verot (NSI Drama Prize) is stunt coordinator/stunt double; and Justina Neepin (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) is production coordinator.

In the film a mysterious predator eludes an aging detective and a cunning outdoorsman to corner and terrorize a woman and son trapped in a remote forest cabin.

Tasha Hubbard wins three awards at Montreal International Documentary Festival

nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up by Tasha Hubbard (NSI IndigiDocs) recently picked up three awards at won at the 2019 Montreal International Documentary Festival.

The film won the Magnus-Isacsson Award, Students’ Award and Women Inmates’ Award.

Jury comments included: “A film that makes an important statement, not least in the context of the Canadian competition; a film that addresses an issue that should inspire each of us to take action.”

The film follows the aftermath of the shooting death of Colten Boushie.

A surreal parable doubling as a psychological horror film. Undeveloped is the story of a girl who wakes up to mysterious cards sliding into her room with one-word instructions for her to dress up for a Polaroid camera and then send the developed picture back out.

Prompted by visions of a dream-world in which she seems free to be herself, along with the looming presence of a dark, invasive force, she seeks liberation.
