Cowboy Smithx to receive Indspire Award Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:16 PM PST Congrats to Cowboy Smithx (NSI IndigiDocs) who is an Indspire Award winner in the arts category for his contribution as a filmmaker, director and supporter of Indigenous youth in the arts. Award-winning producer, director and actor Cowboy Smithx is a nationally-recognized advocate for Indigenous arts and culture, bringing Indigenous artistic voices – particularly those of Indigenous youth – to the forefront. He is the founder and curator of REDx Talks, an acclaimed not-for-profit speaker series focusing on Indigenous issues in Canada and around the world. The Indspire Awards represents the highest honour the Indigenous community bestows upon its own people. After 26 years, the Indspire Awards have honoured 362 First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement. The 2020 Indspire Awards ceremony takes place at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on March 6. NSI alumni receive Hot Docs funding Posted: 06 Feb 2020 01:54 PM PST Congratulations to the NSI grads who received financing from the CrossCurrents Canada Doc Funds. So You Want To Be A Muslim (feature) from director/producer Hoda Elatawi (NSI Global Marketing) – production Ojibiikaan: Food As Medicine (feature) from producer Lisa Jackson (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) – production Reclaim My Skin (feature) from director Marie Clements (NSI Storytellers, Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) and producer Catherine Bainbridge (NSI Global Marketing) – developmentPromoting inclusion in the documentary space, the CrossCurrents Doc Funds foster storytelling from within groups whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented. The filmmaker’s deep connections to the community will offer a unique perspective on the stories they share. The Canadian funding stream, supported by Netflix, is for emerging and sophomore Canadian storytellers who are Indigenous, Francophone, deaf and/or have a disability, racialized or persons of colour.
