Tonya Williams (NSI Global Marketing), former star of The Young and the Restless, leads an acting master class on Sunday, February 23 during the Afro Prairie Film Festival in Winnipeg.

Actress, Reelworld Film Festival and Reelworld Screen Institute founder and executive director Tonya will share the wisdom gained over 40 years in the entertainment industry.

Having worked in front of and behind the cameras as a producer, director and writer, Tonya has a wealth of knowledge about the Canadian and US industries. Her passion for more inclusion of BIPOC screen-based creators in the entertainment industry has been at the forefront since the inception of her career and advocacy work.

Discover the new initiatives Reelworld has in store for Canadian BIPOC screen industry professionals and the new tools Reelworld is launching to create more jobs and opportunities for talent across Canada.

The event takes place at noon, Artspace, 100 Arthur Street, Winnipeg.

The festival runs from February 19 to 23.

Congrats to Darcy Waite (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) and Kat Baulu (NSI Drama Prize) whose films will be showcased at Perspective Canada in Berlin during the European Film Market (EFM), February 20 to 27.

Perspective Canada takes place during the European Film Market that runs parallel to the Berlinale. The showcase strives to increase the international exploitation of Canadian feature-length films and spotlight Canadian companies, films and talent to the over 9,900 potential buyers, sellers and producers from more than 110 countries accredited by the EFM.

Production has begun on Unsettled by Jennifer Podemski (NSI Global Marketing, Telefilm Canada Spark Plug Program) and Derek Diorio. The pair share creator / writer / producer and director credits on the 10 part dramatic series for TVO and APTN which tells the story of an urban Indigenous family who lose their fortune and move from Toronto to a northern Ontario First Nation.

Of the series’ 55 roles, 50 are Indigenous characters played by Indigenous actors. The series is being shot almost entirely on Nipissing First Nation in Ontario.

The series is produced by Redcloud Studios Inc. and Distinct Features.

On March 12 Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, MacKenzie Art Gallery, the NFB and University of Regina Department of Film will present a free event, Remembering the Past Looking to the Future, showcasing Saskatchewan women filmmakers to honour the memory of Trudy Stewart (pictured), a well loved Saskatchewan filmmaker (and NSI alumna) who passed away in September 2019. A panel discussion will follow with Elaine Pain, Dianne Ouellette and Janine Windolph.

The lineup includes films made in various styles including animation, experimental and cinema verité.

The event takes place in the Shumiatcher Theatre at MacKenzie Art Gallery. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the screening starts at 7 p.m.
