Eight Manitoba content creators have been selected to participate in a new online workshop series delivered by the National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) in partnership with Film Training Manitoba (FTM) designed to help participants develop their story ideas while in isolation due to COVID-19. Through the Manitoba Content Creators Development Accelerator, Jan Miller – top international development trainer and consultant in film and television – will provide participants with expert tips and tools to make their story ideas sing and ready for pitching to a panel that may include producers, funders and broadcasters. Under Jan’s tutelage, it will be exciting to watch these stories unfold. She’s already assigned homework prior to the first of their online learning sessions. We’re thankful that through this partnership with Film Training Manitoba, we can continue developing our province’s creators – even during the current pandemic.” “FTM and NSI’s new accelerator partnership is supporting the development of professionals in Manitoba’s growing film and television industry with this exceptional learning opportunity. This unique training will serve to grow the skills of our community and NSI has been an excellent partner even in these challenging times. The accelerator will culminate in an online forum where participants pitch their projects to a panel that may include producers, funders and broadcasters. The initiative was developed in response to feedback FTM received from members of the local film community asking what support they would like to further their careers in light of COVID-19. Many expressed a desire to nurture their own projects. Training takes place online between May 10 and May 29, 2020 and includes mentoring / feedback sessions and a final pitch forum. Participants will be assigned work to prepare for the initial workshop, with work in between to perfect their pitch. The Manitoba Content Creators Development Accelerator is made possible by Program Partner Film Training Manitoba (FTM). FTM is a member of the sector council program funded by the Province of Manitoba’s Economic Development and Training. Erica is Cree/Ojibway from Peguis First Nation. She is a proud mother, multi-award winning filmmaker and owner of Kejic Productions providing video production, photography and graphic design. Erica started her journey through a multimedia program called Just TV and is an alumna of the CBC New Indigenous Voices and NSI IndigiDocs programs. Erica won the first Indigenous Film Award at Manito Ahbee Festival 2019. Her most recent film, Run As One – The Journey of the Front Runners, has been shared in film festivals across the globe, won two Golden Sheaf awards and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award and Banff World Media Festival Award. Along with her passion for storytelling, Erica is also passionate about working with Indigenous youth in her community by reconnecting them to their culture and identity. Erica currently runs a cultural program at the Broadway Neighbourhood Centre and mentors youth in video production. The beauty of her culture continually inspires Erica’s work and motivates her to share the knowledge of her elders for future generations. Sage Daniels
Sage is an enterprising young man from Winnipeg. For a number of years Sage has been a familiar face on the Winnipeg comedy scene. He has worked as a writer and producer for film and television in Winnipeg. He has worked both as a writer and producer on several short films such as Crash Site, Nosisim and My Boy. His works have been seen around the world and on broadcast television. He received funding from Harold Greenberg Fund’s Manitoba Shorts Program for his first short film Broken Glass. Recently Sage signed on as producer for Sonya Ballantyne’s feature film WWShe. His funny wit and pithy sarcasm have earned him a spot in the heart of the Winnipeg comedy scene. He is always trying to better himself as a comedian and filmmaker. He seeks out stage time to perfect his voice and writing style, showing a true love for the art of comedy. Sage has what it takes to make it as a new-wave humourist: relentless, dedicated and, most importantly, funny. Joshua Hood
Joshua is a writer/producer based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He first picked up a camera at the age of three and has never put it down since. Starting as an improv performer in his pre-teens, he began working in television as a studio camera operator aged 15. Working with Shaw TV Winnipeg as a producer/editor from 2014 to 2017, Joshua has edited hundreds of hours of local television, produced dozens of news-style stories, short and full-length documentaries, and acted as showrunner for three seasons of his award-winning scripted series Millworth. He studied at Vancouver Film School and graduated from the film production program in 2018 with honours, specializing in producing and post-production. Joshua is currently working as a script supervisor in the Manitoba film industry and is actively developing his own projects between shoots. Reed Makayev
Reed began his career as a film and television industry professional in 2004 by being in the right place at the right time. Wanting to round out the on-the-job training he received working on set he attended the film production program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Upon graduating in 2007 Reed returned to Winnipeg with a more complete understanding of the filmmaking process. Since 2009 Reed has been a member of the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC), rising through the ranks of the assistant director department. Since 2016 he has held the position of vice president of the DGC’s Manitoba District Council and has also increased his participation as an instructor through Film Training Manitoba (FTM). With his rock-solid base of experience Reed has shifted his focus back to his love of storytelling. His writing aims to give a unique perspective to the seemingly simple lives of the people around him, while allowing his characters’ inner magic to shine through. Katie Man
Katie lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she works in the art department of the local film and television industry. In her personal life she writes short fiction, and gardens. Thematically, Katie is interested in writing stories about women’s work, friendship and the natural world. She studied film and art history at the University of Manitoba. After graduation, Katie worked for several years as a video editor and A/V technician before moving into the film and television industry. She has focused on her professional career for many years, and is excited to work on personal creative projects with the help of NSI. Jesse Peterson
Born and raised in Manitoba, Jesse studied fine arts and film studies at the University of Manitoba, and began producing 8mm and 16mm short films. He also honed his craft as a musician and songwriter in local rock favourites the Fever Breaks, no-wave Multiple Partners, country punks The Stuls and, in Vietnam, the rockabilly 67’s. Jesse graduated, with distinction, from the digital media design program at Red River College, winning student film awards along the way. His experience in film continued as assistant director on independent feature films and quirky Canadian television shows. He spent a decade in Southeast Asia directing commercials for international brands. His recent short film In the June paved the way for art directing features in Manitoba while developing his next project. He is very excited to participate in the Manitoba Content Creators Development Accelerator. Christina Reid
Christina is an emerging writer/producer born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She studied psychology and sociology at the University of Winnipeg and is currently working in the agricultural field for a privately owned company. She is co-founder of production company Little Awkward Company. Christina’s passion is to make content that she likes to call “uncomfortable humour.” In her downtime she enjoys music, travel, cooking and spending time with her two dogs Juicy and Fatty. Vincent Tang
Vincent is an independent filmmaker from Winnipeg, Manitoba. During his childhood, Vincent dreamed of being a filmmaker. However, he ultimately enrolled at the University of Manitoba and studied architecture, earning a bachelor’s in environmental design and master’s in landscape architecture. During his master’s program, Vincent enrolled in evening classes for film production and this reinvigorated his passion for the art form. Following graduation, and with his great passion for film, Vincent left a promising career in landscape architecture to pursue his dream of being a filmmaker. His independent work as a director and cinematographer has led to numerous short films which have screened at national and international film festivals. He is currently a member of the IATSE 856 art department. Using his architectural background, he works as an assistant art director and set designer in film and television production. Vincent admires cinema as the greatest form of storytelling towards the human condition. His films often aim to explore the dynamics between consequence and action, and the inevitable result from character choices regardless of any specific genre. He aims to create films that explore the delicate nature of humanity in which we all recognize and relate to.
