Congratulations to this year’s winners at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). Virtual audiences at VIFF 2020 rated films from Tracey Deer (NSI Storytellers, Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) and Michelle Latimer (NSI Drama Prize) as fan favourites.

Beans, directed and co-written by Tracey Deer, won Most Popular Canadian Narrative and Best Canadian Film. Beans is a coming-of-age story about a young Mohawk girl during the Oka Crisis of 1990.

Inconvenient Indian, directed by Michelle Latimer, won Most Popular Canadian Documentary. The film documents the poetic journey of an Indigenous man as he reclaims his identity.

Other award-winning alumni include Dusty Mancinelli (NSI Features First), Emerging Canadian Director award for Violation; Karen Lam (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Totally Television), Best BC Film Award for The Curse of Willow Song; and Jessie Anthony (TELUS STORYHIVE), BC Emerging Filmmaker Award for Brother, I Cry.

The virtual festival streamed online from September 24 to October 7. Monkey Beach, produced by Loretta Sarah Todd (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program), and The New Corporation: The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel, produced by Trish Dolman (NSI Features First) were among the most streamed Canadian titles.
