Alumni selected to develop projects through Women in the Director’s Chair Posted: 13 Nov 2020 02:12 PM PST Three alumni have been selected for the Women in the Director’s Chair (WIDC) 2020 Story & Leadership program. Rachel Beaulieu (NSI IndigiDocs), Rachel Cairns (NSI Totally Television) and Hayley Gray (TELUS STORYHIVE) are three of the eight women selected for the mentoring program. The four-month program aims to help mid-career directors develop an existing project with the goal to debut their piece. The participants will also attend an Industry Immersion intensive at the 2020 Whistler Film Festival. Hayley will further her feature-length environmental drama, Dry Year. Rachel Beaulieu plans to debut her web series, Coupon Kids and Rachel Cairns plans to develop her debut feature film Glo, In the Dark. Past WIDC Feature Film Award recipient and NSI alumna Gloria Ui Young Kim (NSI Diverse TV Director) will return to mentor the directors. The program runs November 2020 to March 2021. Alumni win big at American Indian Film Festival Posted: 13 Nov 2020 01:48 PM PST Congratulations to the alumni nominated at the American Indian Film Festival (AIFF). Monkey Beach, written, produced and directed by Loretta Todd and co-written by Johnny Darrell and Andrew Duncan (Featuring Aboriginal Stories), collected six awards at AIFF. Awards were handed out opening night. Loretta received the award for best film and best director; while members of her cast were awarded best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. The film, produced by Jason James (NSI Totally Television) and Carla Robinson (NSI Business for Producers), has been the top-grossing Canadian film at the box office since October 23. Ego of a Nation, written and produced by Janet Rogers (NSI IndigiDocs, TELUS STORYHIVE) won for best music video. The American Indian Film Festival runs until November 14.
