The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is pleased to announce the teams selected for the 2017 NSI IndigiDocs course, formerly NSI Aboriginal Documentary.

The name change comes after consultations with many of our Indigenous and non-Indigenous faculty and partners, and our observation of government and other organizations moving towards identifying First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples as Indigenous peoples.

The selected projects and students for 2017 are:

• Bradford’s Story from director Roger Boyer and producer Darcy Waite (Winnipeg, MB)

• Cedar & Spruce from director Odessa Shuquaya and producer April Johnson (Vancouver, BC)

• Mihkowapikwaniy from director Micheal Auger and producer Petie Chalifoux (North Vancouver, BC)

• Residential Ravens from director Steve Sxwithul’txw and producer Michele Mundy (Duncan, BC)

“We are pleased to bring this program back for its fifth year under new name NSI IndigiDocs,” said program co-manager Elise Swerhone. “The eight new students who begin the course in February will start working on their docs right away, training with industry experts including some of the best documentary filmmakers in Canada.”

The course provides Indigenous director and producer teams with training, mentorship and cash towards the production of a short documentary. Students also travel to Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto and have their short films broadcast nationally on APTN and streamed on aptn.ca and nfb.ca.

Alanis Obomsawin of the National Film Board is returning to share her experiences as a documentary filmmaker. Lisa Jackson returns as director advisor, with NSI staff member Brendon Sawatzky serving as producer advisor. Ursula Lawson and Elise Swerhone are the program co-managers. Lisa Meeches is the NSI Aboriginal Training Programs Advisor.
