NSI grads with films at Vancouver’s DOXA fest

Congrats to the NSI grads with films at this year’s DOXA Documentary Film Festival in Vancouver.

Domus from Rhayne Vermette (NSI IndigiDocs) screens in the Transference shorts program on May 10 and Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World from Rezolution Pictures’ Catherine Bainbridge and Christina Fon (both NSI Global Marketing) screens on May 5.

The fest runs May 4 to 14, 2017.

Catch an upcoming screening of Amy Jo Johnson’s feature The Space Between

The Space Between from writer/director Amy Jo Johnson (Corus Diverse TV Director) has an extensive festival run coming up, hitting film fests and comic cons across Canada and the US.

Starting with Comicpalooza in Houston, Texas on May 13, The Space Between will screen in Detroit, Knoxville, Toronto and more. See all screening dates.

The film, which also stars Amy Jo, follows Mitch, a proud new father, who discovers that his baby isn’t his. He leaves his small town and sets out on a journey to find the baby’s true daddy and ultimately what it means to be a father.

Melanie Hadley joins NSI board of directors

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Melanie Hadley, executive in charge of production, drama, at CBC, to its board of directors.

“NSI has a long history with Melanie, going back to her participation in the NSI Aboriginal Youth Pilot Program (now CBC New Indigenous Voices) course,” said Norm Bolen, chair of NSI’s board of directors.

“Her work in broadcasting, both at CBC and previously at APTN, gives her a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enrich NSI. On behalf of the board, I’m pleased to welcome her.”

As executive in charge of production for CBC Drama, Melanie oversees projects in development and production. The properties she manages on behalf of the network include such titles as Heartland, Pure, The Secret Path and When Calls the Heart. She joined CBC with over 15 years of experience working in independent production and for a national broadcaster.

Prior to her role at CBC she was the manager of programming for Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) where she managed development and first- and second-window licencing for television and digital media projects commissioned from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Northwest Territories.

Melanie got her start in the industry through the NSI Aboriginal Youth Pilot Project (now CBC New Indigenous Voices).

“I am very proud to be joining NSI’s board of directors,” said Melanie. “The organization is a key advocate in fostering homegrown diverse content creators, and I have experienced firsthand the tremendous opportunities and support they offer. I am looking forward to being a part of moving NSI’s mandate forward.”
