Sonya Ballantyne to present at TEDxWinnipeg next month

Congrats to Sonya Ballantyne (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) who will be speaking at next month’s TEDxWinnipeg event on June 6.

Sonya will talk about identity and representation, and her road to becoming a filmmaker.

According to her bio:

Sonya became interested in film because she wanted to see people like her mother as a starship captain on Star Trek, or fighting aliens like Ripley. She wanted a Native hero that existed in the present or in the future, to show us that we made it.

Sonya asks: for better or worse, how do today’s representations shape the self-image of people like her?

Jenna and Justina Neepin film Bayline screens at Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque, May 18

Congrats to Jenna (JJ) Neepin (NSI IndigiDocs) and Justina Neepin (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) on the screening of their short film Bayline tomorrow, May 18, at the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque alongside New and Used: Winnipeg. The screening starts at 7 p.m.

In the film, Jenna and Justina’s parents take them to the Bayline, where their father grew up, for a three-day long camping trip. The Bayline was a short term for the Hudson Bay Railway between The Pas and Churchill in Manitoba.

Jenna also wrote a blog post for CBC Short Docs about her and Justina’s film Headdress which premiered at Hot Docs last month. She details the motivation behind the film and the process of making it.

Kate Green’s doc Melting Stars to screen at Dances With Films fest

Congratulations to Kate Green (NSI Totally Television, NSI Lifestyle & Reality Series Producer) whose documentary short Melting Stars celebrates its West coast premiere at Dances With Films Festival in Hollywood on June 5.

Melting Stars unravels the mystery behind one of the largest, most catastrophic species die-offs in recorded history. In the film, biologists scramble to save dying starfish only to learn that a virus was wiping them out.
