Roxann Whitebean (NSI IndigiDocs) is profiled in Playback as part of their Indigenous Voices Rising series. Other grads have also been featured including Eagle Vision, Rezolution Pictures and Michelle Latimer.

Roxann talked about her CBC projects, Thunder Blanket and Karihwanoron: Precious Things, as well as upcoming web project The Warden which received Telefilm Micro-Budget Production Program funding earlier this year after being nominated by NSI.

As Roxann told Playback: “We’re not educating each other enough about our cultures or our current struggles. It’s very important to tell stories of our people who are underrepresented [on screen].”

Congratulations to the NSI grads who won at the Ottawa International Animation Festival over the weekend.

Four Faces of the Moon from Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett (NSI IndigiDocs) was awarded the Canadian Film Institute Award for best Canadian animation.

Denver Jackson and Alain Williams (STORYHIVE Digital Shorts – animation edition) won the TAC Pitch This! competition with their pitch for the 13 x 22 minute series Somnius.

Slasher: Guilty Party, directed by Craig David Wallace (NSI Totally Television), arrives on Netflix on October 17. This is the follow-up to last year’s horror series Slasher.

Set in the remote Canadian winter wilderness, the story revolves around a group of former summer camp counsellors who are forced to return to the isolated campground to retrieve evidence of a crime they committed in their youth.

Before long the group, and the camp’s latest inhabitants – members of a spiritual retreat with their own secrets to hide – find themselves targeted by someone, or something, out for horrific revenge.

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is proud to announce the start of its week-long 2017 NSI Totally Television boot camp, which kicked off yesterday in Toronto.

This year’s associate faculty includes story editors Karen Walton (Orphan Black), Alison Lea Bingeman (Cardinal) and James Hurst (Wynonna Earp), as well as creative professionals from TV series Orphan Black, 21 Thunder and digital series Whatever Linda, Terrific Women and Running with Violet.

“I’m pleased to welcome all of this year’s guest faculty members to the NSI Totally Television boot camp. I know the students will receive the most professional, hands-on training and knowledgeable market intelligence with sessions from these experts,” said program manager Joy Loewen.

Teams advancing to phase two of the course attend the Banff World Media Festival in June 2018.

The program has produced 13 series that have gone into development: six have gone to air, one was piloted and another was produced as a feature film that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
