Riot Resist Revolt Repeat, a play written and directed by Frances Koncan (CBC New Indigenous Voices), will be presented at this year’s Weesageechak Begins to Dance – an annual festival of Indigenous works from Native Earth Performing Arts in Toronto from November 15 to 25.

Iskwe is a young Cree woman living in Winnipeg, a city surrounded by walls that keep the good things in and the bad things out (or maybe it’s the other way around). When her sister goes missing, Iskwe embarks on a journey outside the wall to seek justice, get revenge, and uncover the truth … while her psychiatrist in the hospital where she is being treated for mental illness assures her there is no wall at all.

Inspired by pipelines, by Standing Rock, by resistance, by Nick Cave, by our ancestral revolutionaries throughout history, by the culturally insensitive colonial determinants and treatments of mental illness of Indigenous peoples that perpetuate cycles of trauma, by the trendiness of neon, and by the lonesome lovely landscapes of the Great White North.

Riot Resist Revolt Repeat was also performed at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival this summer.

Shedoesthecity and Telefilm Canada present Leaders in Canadian Film, a panel discussion focusing on how women have built successful careers in the industry, the road to gender equity, and how women in ‘the biz’ can work together to enable positive change.

Molly McGlynn (NSI Drama Prize) is featured as a panelist alongside three other women working in various capacities in the industry.

The event happens Friday, 17 November from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. EST in Toronto.

The morning’s panelists are:

• Maxine Bailey, Toronto International Film Festival’s VP of advancement
• Maya Bankovic, cinematographer
• Molly McGlynn (pictured), director
• Joanna Miles, Entertainment One’s VP of marketing

Telefilm’s executive director Carolle Brabant will speak about Telefilm’s commitment to Canadian women in the film industry.
