National Screen Institute co-presents Rematriate: Passing the seeds at Breakthroughs Film Festival

By Chris Vajcner on May 31, 2021 11:31 am

Rematriate: Passing the seeds

The National Screen Institute is proud to co-present Rematriate: Passing the seeds by director Shelby Lisk at the 10th annual Breakthroughs Film Festival June 16 to 20.

This event is the only festival in Canada devoted exclusively to short films made by emerging women and non binary directors.

Rematriate: Passing of the seeds screens on June 17.

A documentation of a the inception and cultural significance of the “Passing the Seeds” wampum belt, created as a record of the agreement, relationship and story of the rematriation of a collection of heirloom seeds from the Sisters of Providence in Kingston to Ratinenhayén:thos, a group of seed savers and knowledge holders, from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

Two films from alumni are also screening at the festival.

June 16 – Parkdale by Lisa Jackson (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program)

June 17 – êmîcêtôcêt: Many Bloodlines by director Theola Ross and producer Alex Fisher-Bailey (developed through NSI IndigiDocs)

The line-up this year is programmed under the theme of Visible Invisible: exploring the stories of marginalized identities, that are both highly visible and yet seemingly invisible at the same time. The stories of traditions and rituals, parenthood and generational solidarity, along with a multifaceted look into our homes – whether that’s a shared space like a big city or as intimate a space as your own body. There will be film screenings, talkbacks with participating filmmakers and industry programs.

All films and events are available on-demand. Visit the festival website for program and ticket information.
