Free business workshops, presented by CBC, CMPA and CAVCO now available online

CBC, Canada Media Producers Association (CMPA) and the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office’s (CAVCO) collection of online workshops, One Stop Business Workshop, are now available for free online.

One Stop Business Workshop was a virtual event hosted in June 2021 introducing emerging independent producers and content creators from traditionally underrepresented groups to topics related to business and financing for TV, film and original digital content.

Each workshop was recorded and has now been released on the CBC website.

National Screen Institute CEO Joy Loewen moderated the workshop Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Manitoba featuring delegates from Manitoba Film & Music, Yukon Media Development, Government of Northwest Territories and Nunavut Film Development Corporation.

CBC is offering creators and producers an opportunity to earn a Certificate of Completion after watching all videos in season 1 and completing the related quizzes.

Alumni films screening at TIFF

Congratulations to the alumni whose films are selected to screen at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The festival runs from September 9 to 18, hosting both online and in-person events such as film screenings at TIFF Bell Lightbox and the TIFF Tribute Awards.

• Night Raiders – written and directed by Danis Goulet (NSI Drama Prize), executive produced by Lisa Meeches (NSI Indigenous training programs advisor and NSI Storytellers alumna) and Kyle Irving (NSI Global Marketing), associate produced by Eva Thomas (NSI Totally Television) and starring Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (NSI IndigiDocs program manager)

• Angakusajaujuq – The Shaman’s Apprentice – produced by Nadia Mike (NSI Art of Business Management)

TIFF’s Industry Conference runs during the festival featuring masterclasses, moderated discussions and networking events.

Call for applications: WIFT Indigenous Writers Program

Women in Film & TV (WIFT) Toronto is now accepting applications for their new program WIFT Indigenous Writers Program – a career accelerator designed for Indigenous mid-level writers.

This program will create an in-depth, personal experience for a small group of selected writers. It focuses on networking, industry insight and training to help establish and elevate the careers of Indigenous creators.

The program runs for four full days throughout September and October, with workshops, roundtables and mentorship.

Applicants must have a project in development to be considered for the program and be members of WIFT Toronto. The program is free to attend and will be hosted virtually.

Apply now: Good Influence Films’ Indigenous 150+ advanced digital storytelling and podcast training program

Applications are now open for Good Influence Films’ Indigenous 150+ Advanced Digital Storytelling and Podcast Training Program.

The part-time program is designed to help Indigenous creatives build their media and storytelling careers, industry network and business skills like proposal writing and pitching.

The program runs from September 12, 2021 to January 23, 2022 and will feature modules like narrative storytelling, advanced editing and sound effects. Participants will combine these skills to develop and produce two narrative- or process-based podcast episodes during the practicum portion of the program. Participants will be provided with an $800 budget to be used for the creation of each episode.

This is an online program open to Indigenous creators across Canada, aged 20-35. A total of 12 participants will be selected.
