Register for free to attend CMPA’s Prime Time conference

Registration is now open for the Canadian Media Producers Association’s (CMPA) Prime Time 2022 conference, and it’s free.

Prime Time is Canada’s preeminent meeting place for leaders and trendsetters in media production, broadcasting, TV and feature film.

Network with the decision-makers in the industry through discussions and online events like keynotes, pitch markets and virtual receptions. This year, Prime Time will introduce in-person pop-up networking events for delegates on-the-ground in communities across Canada.

Participate in the expanded buyers briefings, exclusive briefings conducted by global buyers and development executives. Prime Time will also host the Prime Time Pitch Market where you can have one-on-one meetings to pitch your project to global buyers.

Prime Time 2022 streams online from February 3 to 11.

Steven Bignell directs new music video

Emerging filmmaker Steven Bignell (NSI New Northern Voices) directed a new music video for the Dee Erin Band called Genocide.

The video premiered in late September. The band is based out of Opaskwayak Cree Nation in Manitoba.

Steven is currently in pre-production on his film, The Tomahawk, developed through the NSI New Northern Voices program. Production is set to begin in February 2022.

Trigger warning: the video contains content about residential schools.

This week’s episode of The Hats We Wear features writer, producer and actor Josh Epstein.

The National Screen Institute’s new alumni podcast, The Hats We Wear, features artists and leaders from the film and television industries as they discuss their career highs and lows – and how life experiences have shaped their perspectives as people and storytellers.

Hosted by National Screen Institute communications intern Emily Palmer, this podcast not only covers topics like film and television but also family, injustices and the road to reaching one’s dreams

The Hats We Wear is released to coincide with the National Screen Institute’s annual fundraising campaign which showcases the stories of the alumni community. Episodes will be published weekly throughout November and December providing a glimpse into the lives of the storytellers supported by the work of the National Screen Institute.

The National Screen Institute is calling on you to make an ongoing donation in support of the storytelling community by committing to becoming a monthly donor for as little as $5 per month.

Your donation benefits the growing community of Canadian creators whose work demonstrates the power story has to change the world for the better.


Episode 4: Josh Epstein

Josh Epstein discusses his path to becoming a writer and producer, and how his first acting role as Michael in Peter Pan sparked a love for storytelling that has stayed with him to this day.

Josh wrote and produced the feature, Adventures in Public School, in 2014 through the NSI Features First program along with fellow grad Kyle Rideout. Josh walks us through their process, from researching the characters to premiering the film at the Toronto International Film Festival.
