TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY April 14
1830 - About this time, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation known as Doctrine and Covenants 23, a revelation to Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel H. Smith, Joseph Smith Sr., and Joseph Knight Sr., who had approached the Prophet asking to know the Lord's will for them. The revelation calls on them to preach the gospel and strengthen the Church. (History of the Church, 1:80)
1832 - Brigham Young and his wife, Miriam, are baptized in a millpond near Mendon, New York.
1842 - The Prophet Joseph meets with Calvin A. Warren, a lawyer from Quincy, Illinois, to learn about the bankruptcy law in the United States and to see if he qualified to file. He writes, "I was forced into the measure by having been robbed, plundered, and wasted of all my property, time after time, in various places, by the very ones who made the law, namely, the people of the United States, thereby having been obliged to contract heavy debts to prevent the utter destruction of myself, family and friends, and by those who were justly and legally owing me, taking the advantage of the same act of bankruptcy, so that I could not collect my just dues, thus leaving me no alternative by to become subject again to stripping, wasting, and destitution, by vexatious writs, and law suits, and imprisonments, or take that course to extricate myself, which the law had pointed out" (History of the Church, 4:595). Due to persecution and questionable legal processes, he was later denied the discharge of his debts.
1844 - It was a rainy Sunday in Nauvoo and no meeting was held at the grove. However, the Prophet Joseph "preached on board the Maid of Iowa." (History of the Church, 6:333).
1845 - Being without a formal government in the City of Nauvoo, the Saints resorted to unique ways to keep the peace. Brigham Young records, "Elder Richards and I attended a deacons' meeting. The deacons have become very efficient looking after the welfare of the saints; every part of the city is watched with the strictest care, and whatever time of night the streets are traveled at the corner of ever block a deacon is found attending to his duty" (History of the Church, 7:399).
1847 - Brigham Young and the first group of pioneers leave Winter Quarters, Iowa, to begin the overland trek to the Rocky Mountains. There were 143 men, 3 women, 2 children, 72 wagons, 93 horses, 52 mules, 66 oxen, 19 cows, and 17 dogs who started west as the Saints began crossing the plains to their new home in the mountains.
1929 - The first convert baptisms, Bertha Sell and her children, take place in Brazil.
