TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY
July 26

1838 - "The First Presidency, High Council, and Bishop's court assembled at Far West to dispose of the public properties of the Church in the hands of the Bishops, many of the brethren having consecrated their surplus property according to the revelations" (History of the Church, 3:47).

1847 - Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Wilford Woodruff, George A. Smith, Ezra T. Benson, Willard Richards, Albert Carrington, William Clayton, and Lorenzo Dow Young climb a hill at the north of the Salt Lake Valley and name it Ensign Peak. Others of the camp were sent to explore the valley while the others continued the planting of crops.

1850 - Peter Forsgren, the first convert in Sweden, is baptized.

1912 - Church leaders in northern Mexico order the Saints to evacuate to El Paso, Texas, as a result of the civil war within Mexico. Some forty-eight hundred Latter-day Saints move from the Mexican colonies to safety in the United States.

1954 - Life Magazine highlights the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's twenty-five years of broadcasting.

1987 - The Saints in Great Britain celebrate 150 years of the Church in the British Isles.

1998 - The Monticello Utah Temple is dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. It is the first of the smaller temples to be completed and dedicated.
