1836 - The Prophet Joseph Smith, and those accompanying him, arrived in New York City on their way to Boston. While in New York City, they visited the burnt district, a section of the city that had burned to the ground in December 1835 destroying over fifteen million dollars in property. The Prophet noted that it was partial fulfillment of the prediction that in the last days there should be fire and vapor of smoke.
1837 - After arriving in Buffalo, New York, Brigham Young and Albert P. Rockwood head for their mission in the Eastern States, and the Prophet Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and Thomas B. Marsh, start for Toronto, Canada, where they will spend the next month meeting with the Saints and doing missionary work in Canada. Also, the first converts in England race to the banks of the River Ribble to see who will be the first one baptized by Elder Heber C. Kimball. George D. Watt wins the race and becomes the first person baptized in Great Britain. (History of the Church, 2:503-504)
1838 - The Prophet Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon returned from Adam-ondi-Ahman to Far West, Missouri. (History of the Church, 3:48)
1843 - The Prophet Joseph "was very sick, my lungs oppressed and overheated . . . and called for my brother Hyrum and William Law, and Willard Richards to lay on hands and pray for me" (History of the Church, 5:522).
1844 - Samuel Smith, brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, dies of "bilious Fever" just over a month after the martyrdom of his brothers Hyrum and Joseph. Often called the third martyr because the sickness attacked him after being chased by the mob outside of Carthage on the day his brothers were killed.
1847 - The men of the sick detachment of the Mormon Battalion, who arrived the day before, build the first structure in the Salt Lake Valley-a bowery as a shady place to hold meetings. Poles were placed in the ground, and long poles were laid across them, and timbers and brush were placed on the framework to provide shade. During the evening, a praise service for their safe arrival was held in their newly built bowery.
1849 - Augustus Saint d'Anna becomes the first convert baptized in France by Elder William Howells.
1887 - Under the provisions of the anti-polygamy Edmunds-Tucker Act passed by the United States Congress, suits are filed against the Church and its Perpetual Emigrating Fund Company, and the federal government begins confiscating Church property.
1965 - Traveling eight thousand miles from Japan to Hawaii, 160 Japanese Saints are the first group to travel from Japan to the Laie Hawaii Temple to have their temple work completed.
2000 - The Oklahoma City Oklahoma Temple was dedicated by President James E. Faust of the First Presidency.
2005 - The 50th anniversary of the dedication of Korea for the preaching of the gospel was celebrated in music and dance as performers from all over South Korea put on a "parade of talent" at Olympic Park in Seoul.
