TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY May 11 1834 - Zion's Camp spent the Sabbath day in Richfield Township, Ohio, where Elder Sylvester Smith preached and the Sacrament was received. Eight more brethren join them. (History of the Church, 2:65) 1843 - The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, under the direction of Brigham Young, met in council and made assignments for missionary work. Missionaries were called to serve in Wales (Dan Jones), Ireland (James Sloan), England (Reuben Hedlock, Samuel James, Lucius Scovil), Scotland (John Cairnes), and the Pacific Isles (Addison Pratt, Noah Rogers, Benjamin Grouard, Knowlton F. Hanks). Reuben Hedlock was called to preside over the Church in Great Britain and be assisted by Elders Hiram Clark and Thomas Ward. Other business was also transacted. (History of the Church, 5:386) 1847 - After the days travel, Appleton Harmon spent the evening under William Clayton's direction making the odometer according to the plan given them by Orson Pratt. William Clayton was anxious to get it completed as he had become weary of counting the revolutions of a wagon wheel to measure the distance traveled each day. The original pioneer wagon train was now following along the north bank of the North Platte River. 1850 - The Scandinavian Mission is organized. 1978 - The Laura Branch, the first branch in the Marshall Islands is organized. 1993 - Belarus is dedicated for the preaching of the gospel by Elder Russell M. Nelson. |
