TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 17 1787 - The Constitution of the United States is signed by thirty-nine men representing the original thirteen states, establishing many of the rights and freedoms that paved the way for the restoration of the gospel. 1837 - A conference was held in the Kirtland Temple. The Prophet Joseph spoke on the gathering of the Saints in the last days. William Marks was appointed as an agent to Bishop Newel K. Whitney, and many elders were given assignments to travel in preaching the gospel. Due to the growth of the Church, it was agreed upon to have Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon "appoint other stakes, or places of gatherings" for the Saints. (History of the Church, 2:514). 1843 - At Sunday meeting, the Prophet Joseph stayed "outside the assembly to keep order and set an example to the other officers." After the meeting he gave instructions about order in the congregation. In the evening a Unitarian minister, Mr. Blodgett, preached. The Prophet Joseph wrote he was "gratified with his sermon in general, but differed in opinion on some points, on which I freely expressed myself to his great satisfaction" (History of the Church, 6:34). 1846 - After a week of sporadic fighting known as the Battle of Nauvoo, several hundred members of the Church, mostly the poor and ill, were forced to cross the Mississippi River into Iowa. 1870 - Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, is rebaptized a member of the Church by Edward Stevenson. 1888 - George Q. Cannon turns himself in to federal authorities and is sentenced to 175 days in the penitentiary for violating anti-polygamy laws. 1978 - The first episode of the original TV series Battlestar Gallactica, created, written, and produced by Church member Glen A. Larson, airs on ABC. The story line of the series incorporates some LDS beliefs. 1988 - Tthe Brigham Young University Folk Dancers perform at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. 2000 - The Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple is dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. |
