1823 - After the appearance of the angel Moroni three times during the night and again in the morning, the Prophet Joseph Smith goes to the Hill Cumorah and finds the gold plates. Moroni appears to him again and tells him he cannot take the plates at that time, but must return to this location on this date for the next four years to be taught and prepared in his calling and mission. (History of the Church, 1:14-16)
1827 - The Prophet Joseph Smith receives the gold plates, with the Urim and Thummim and breastplate, from the Angel Moroni at the Hill Cumorah. His wife Emma went with him and stayed in the wagon while Joseph went after the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. (History of the Church, 1:18)
1828 - Moroni returns the plates to the Prophet Joseph Smith after having taken them from him when Martin Harris lost the 116 page manuscript from the translated record.
1832 - The Prophet Joseph Smith receives portions of Doctrine and Covenants 84, a revelation on the Priesthood, on this day and the rest on the following day.
1838 - The Saints living in De Witt, Missouri, petition Governor Boggs for protection from the mobs that had threatened them with eviction or extermination on September 20th.
1839 - The Prophet Joseph delivers a discourse to the Saints on the "other comforter" that he had previously taught the Twelve Apostles. He then records he spent the next few days transacting business and visiting the sick in Commerce (later Nauvoo), who in the most part, were recovering.
1841 - A company of men leaves Nauvoo, Illinois, for the pine forests of Wisconsin to cut timber that would be floated down the Mississippi River and then cut for use in the construction of the Nauvoo Temple, the Nauvoo House, and other building projects in Nauvoo.
1851 - Elder Amasa M. Lyman and others purchase a 100,000 acre ranch in southern California for a Latter-day Saint community that would become known as San Bernardino.
1897 - King Oscar of Sweden receives a copy of the Book of Mormon as a gift from the Scandinavian Saints in Utah. It was delivered by Elder Janne M. Sjodahl.
2010 - Elder Brent H. Nielson, of the Pacific Area Presidency, visited the Canterbury New Zealand earthquake zone to view firsthand the impact of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake had on the region. Elder Nielson presented $180,000 on behalf of the Church to emergency mayoral funds in Selwyn, Waimakariri and Christchurch. The money will be used to support relief efforts and restore services to the worst affected areas.
