TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 24
1830 - The Prophet Joseph Smith received Doctrine and Covenants 30, a revelation for David Whitmer, Peter Whitmer Jr., and John Whitmer concerning their callings and duties in the Church. (History of the Church, 1:115-116)
1832 - The Prophet Joseph Smith received the remainder of Doctrine and Covenants 84, a revelation containing instructions about the priesthood and a poetic section called the new song of Zion. (History of the Church, 1:286-295)
1835 - The Prophet Joseph Smith met with the high council to discuss "the redemption of Zion." It was decided to petition the Governor of Missouri to allow those who had been forced from their lands which they had purchased in Jackson County, to return to live on them. (History of the Church, 2:281-182)
1838 - The Kirtland Camp continued on their journey towards Far West. They had spent some time reorganizing the Camp as many families had stopped along the way to work and prepare for the winter. Those remaining hoped to reach Far West before their food ran out. They camped on the Elk Fork of the Salt River and found the inhabitants in the area volunteering to go and fight the Mormons at Far West. They record that they put their trust in God to protect them until they arrive at their destination at Far West.
1860 - The Stoddard handcart company, consisting of 126 people and twenty-two handcarts, enters Salt Lake City, Utah, the last of the ten handcart companies to cross the plains.
1890 - President Wilford Woodruff issues the Manifesto, ending the practice of plural marriage in the Church. In 1914 it is added to the Doctrine and Covenants and is known today as Official Declaration 1.
1909 - U.S. President William Howard Taft visits Utah and tours the communities south of Salt Lake City with Elder Reed Smoot, a U.S. Senator from Utah.
2013 - In a pre-conference press release, church officials indicated the priesthood session of the 183rd Semiannual General Conference on Oct. 5 will be broadcast live on BYUtv and two online resources, LDS.org and the Mormon Channel.
