View in browser SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 A federal appeals court Friday breathed new life into a lawsuit claiming that President Donald Trump's profiting from restaurants and hotels patronized by government officials violates the Constitution.
NBC News' Pete Williams explains: In late 2017, a judge threw the case out, concluding that the groups behind the lawsuit did not have a legal right to bring the challenge over a violation of the Constitution's emoluments clause, which forbids a president to receive financial benefits from foreign or domestic governments. On tonight's Hardball with Chris Matthews, Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold pointed out that today, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo headlined a private event at the Trump International Hotel in Washington.
While speaking at that event, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo mocked the Post's reporting on Trump's conflicts of interests.
Fahrenthold is also trying to track down the 12 sites in 8 states that the Trump team says they vetted for the G-7 summit, before concluding that the Trump National Doral Golf Resort was "the best."

Opinion The New York attorney general's office said in a Friday court filing that it had found at least $1 billion in wire transfers by the Sackler family, fueling claims the owners of OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma were trying to hide assets as they faced a growing number of lawsuits over their role in the opioid crisis. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed a Republican political action committee ad that opened with an image of her face being consumed by flames, which ran during Thursday night's Democratic debate. "Republicans are running TV ads setting pictures of me on fire to convince people they aren’t racist," the New York Democrat tweeted Thursday night after the ad ran during the debate on ABC. 'Saturday Night Live' cast member's ethnic slurs forces show to grapple with limits of comedy "Saturday Night Live" remained silent Friday after the growing furor that one of its newest cast members has a history of racist and homophobic remarks.
Opinion: Felicity Huffman's sentencing in the college admissions scandal is irrelevant While this scandal was high-profile and brought endless opportunities for schadenfreude, I realized that the bigger issue is and has always been all the perfectly legal ways colleges favor white and wealthy kids. I wish the focus was on those ills, and not just the ones that these celebrities engaged in. By Christina Tucker.
