Lawmakers in St. Paul are preparing to take on the most contentious issue of the legislative session, with just hours left to finalize a state budget.

A wide ranging public safety bill funds everything from courts to firefighter training. But policy provisions attached to the budget have been a source of contention between DFLers calling for changes to policing and Republicans who say they’re defending public safety.

Senate GOP leader Paul Gazelka stood his ground on a narrow scope of changes, in an interview with MPR News. He said Republicans felt activists were pushing to dismantle law enforcement, rather than change it.

And he said Republicans had to give up some of their wishes for public safety, as well.

Gov. Tim Walz offered some limited executive actions to bolster changes outlined in the new bill, but limits to traffic stops, wide release of body camera video and other changes are likely to remain outside of an agreement as the state’s financial clock winds down.

In COVID-19 news, Minnesota reported no new deaths today, for only the eighth time in a year. It's another sign of the waning pandemic.

Despite growing concern nationwide about the potential for rapid spread of the Delta variant, COVID-19 continues to recede in Minnesota, posting fewer than 800 active cases for the first time in nearly a year.

The state has also reported its lowest ever point for new hospitalizations on consecutive days.
