The most important object in this season's auction is probably the 84-page draft of Hein Gorny's "Berlinbuch" with numerous photographs and photo collages (lot 53, € 8/10,000), which until now was thought to have been lost forever. Gorny had planned to publish the photo book documenting the war-destroyed capital in 1946, intending it as a loud accusation against the main perpetrators of the war, the criminal Nazi regime. The book features a series of juxtapositions, in which he compares pre-war photographs with those in the current state of destruction - using his own photographs and those of his colleague Friedrich Seidenstücker, as well as illustrations from magazines and aerial photographs by the American photographer Adolph Carl Byers. This design for a photo book is an impressive contemporary document – even more as this, the photographer's last major project, found no publisher immediately after the end of the war.

A group of 36 albumen prints by Otto Schoefft forms the highlight of the 19th century photography on offer. The works include Oriental genre scenes, landscape, and architectural photographs, and were commissioned by the Egyptian Viceroy for the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna, and as of 1875 they were distributed as a portfolio under the title 'Le Caire pittoresque' (lot 3, € 8/12,000).

Among the highlights from the classical photography of the early 20th century are four large-format combination gum dichromate prints by Heinrich Kühn from south German private ownership (lot 14-17, each valued at € 15/20,000). The masterful, pictorialistic works were created around 1900, when the art photography movement was at its peak and Kühn's prints were shown in numerous international exhibitions. The Dutch washerwomen on the beach (lot 14), dressed in traditional costumes typical of their country, were inspired by painted works, such as Max Liebermann's "Women Mending Nets", painted a few years earlier. Heinrich Kühn's town and city views are particularly rare: The picturesque view of Rotterdam, reminiscent of a veduta painting, is an atmospheric example (lot 15).

The early portrait of a married couple from Herdorf by August Sander is also among the finest prints on offer this autumn. The large-format bromoil print is a rarity valued at € 4/5,000 (lot 19). Other classic works by Sander will also be called, including a beautiful view of Cologne (lot 24, € 5,000). Hugo Erfurth, the contemporary of Sander, who is famous for his artist portraits, is the author of the portrait of Otto Dix from the painter's estate (lot 30, € 6/8,000).

The collection of 173 gelatin silver prints by Hugo Brehme is an especially impressive contemporary document. The photographs by the Eisenach-born photographer, who emigrated to Mexico at the age of 25, show the country's scenic beauty as well as the explosive political situation in Mexico at a time of intense upheaval in the early 20th century. Brehme's photographs, the archive of which were included in UNESCO's "Memory of the World" programme in 2003, have had a decisive influence on the 20th century image of Mexico through numerous publications (lot 61, € 25,000).

Another especially noteworthy lot is the strikingly beautiful, almost abstract photograph of a detail of a crane by Germaine Krull. The photograph was taken in 1924 in the port of Amsterdam and was featured in the famous 'Métal' portfolio published in 1928 (lot 56, € 7/9,000).

Four photographs by the Belgian CoBrA artist Serge Vandercam (lot 91-94, € 2/3.000 to 6/8.000) are particularly extraordinary, as they are very rarely offered at auction. Over the course of his short photographic career around 1950 he created an extremely complex photogram (lot 93) and three vintage prints, stylistically situated between the experimental photography of the Surrealists and Subjective Photography movement.

Another interesting lot in the auction is the limited edition portfolio "Icons" with 15 photos by Henry Wessel. Created between 1968 and 1989, the works depict - with a fine sense for the bizarre - the suburbs of the American west coast and their inhabitants (lot 116, € 25/30,000). Henry Wessel and Lewis Baltz, who is also represented in this auction with several works (lot 117-120, € 3/4.000 to 8/10.000), are among the photographers making up the style of the "New Topographics" movement.

The sale will feature a work from Sebastião Salgado's "Genesis" series, depicting the mighty fin of a Southern Right Whale in an elegant arc, taken off the Argentinian coast of Patagonia (lot 153, € 9/12,000).

Among the photographic highlights of the "Contemporary Art" auction are three works by Thomas Ruff from the "Nights", "Nudes", and "Substrates" series (lot 527, 541, 542, € 20/30,000 - € 50/70,000). The large-format C-prints mark important stages in the artistic development of the Düsseldorf-based photo artist since the 1990s - from the documentation of an existing situation captured with the aid of a night vision camera to the alienation of anonymous internet data and pure abstraction. At the same time, they present attractive and characteristic examples within these groups of works.

A close-up photographic self-portrait of Gerhard Richter crossing his eyes may also arouse some interest. This ironic self-portrait as an "anti-hero" is a witty response to the traditional, generally idealizing concept of the artist's self-portrait (lot 511, € 20/30,000).
