Auction 1089 | Photography | Wednesday, 31st May 2017 15:00

As in previous seasons, our selection of photography will once again be offered in two auctions taking place on consecutive days. Alongside the 205 lot strong Photography sale on 31st May, a further 16 important artist’s photographs will be offered as part of the auction Contemporary Art and Photography taking place on 1st June.

Some of the most fascinating works on offer this season are a group of photos by August Sander. Highlight among these is his famous portrait of the painter Heinrich Hoerle from 1928, here offered as a print from 1953 (lot 23, €50/70,000). The impressive piece originates from a portfolio "Köln wie es war" (Cologne as it was) of images depicting Cologne before WWII, which the photographer gave as a 65th birthday present to the then Mayor of the city Robert Goerlinger. The image shows the artist, who was one of the most influential members of the "Kölner Progressiven", looking out towards the viewer with a piercing gaze that appears almost sceptical or sardonic. A related work is a depiction of a "rag ball" from the same year. These parties were organised as part of the Cologne Carnival and were an important social event for artists in the city during the 1920s (lot 25, €5/7,000). The sale will also feature further portrait, landscape, and architectural photographs by August Sander under lots 17 – 24, with estimates ranging from €1,200 to €4,000.

Highlights of the 19th century photography on offer this season include a portrait of the Victorian painter "George Frederick Watts" taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1865 (lot 4, €3/4,000). Watts was a friend of the photographer and encouraged her to begin her photographic project "From life", an extensive series of portraits depicting the leading artists and intellectuals of her time. Eugène Atget’s albumin print shows the "Cour Ovale in Fontainebleau" at around 1905 long before it became a tourist attraction, in a state of scenic disrepair (lot 3, €4/5,000).

As always, German classic photography of the 20th century will form a prominent and varied portion of this spring’s sale, for example two studies of the Wadden Sea from 1935 and 1942 by Alfred Ehrhardt (lots 41/42, €1,5/2,000 and €3/4,000). Also from around this time are two works showing the industrial complexes of the "Ruhrchemie AG" by Albert Renger-Patzsch (lots 44/45, each €1,8/2,000) and Leni Riefenstahl’s vintage print of a man diving from 10 meters taken during the making of her film "Olympia" (lot 50, €5/7,000). German post-war photography is represented by Peter Keetman and Ludwig Windstosser (lots 75-81, €1,4/1,600 to €2,5/3,000), two artists from the "fotoform" group; the East and West German journalistic photography of Arno Fischer, Barbara Klemm, Robert Lebeck and Will McBride (lots 123-134, €800 to €1,2/1,500); and the fashion photograhs of F.C. Gundlach and Werner Bokelberg (lots 95/96 and lot 99, €1,200 - €1,8/2,000).

The artistic and intellectual scene of Paris, as well as the city’s glittering night life, featured prominently in the pre- and post-war photography of Germaine Krull and André Kertész – of which lot 55, "Mondrian's glasses and pipe" from 1926 is a particularly interesting example (€5/6,000) – as well as that of Brassai (lot 57, €3/3,500) and Gisèle Freund (lots 58 and 85, €800 and €900).

The other side of the globe is represented by the classic works of the American photographers Berenice Abbott and Andreas Feininger from the 1940s. Horst P. Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, William Klein and Elliott Erwitt are represented with works depicting a variety of motifs including architecture, portraits, objects, and landscapes, as well as fashion photography of the 50s and 60s. Among those pieces that may be of interest especially to younger collectors are several assorted lots comprising both older and more recent prints. For example two portfolios of vintage prints depicting motifs from China by the German photographer Hedda Hammer Morrison (lots 60/61, €1/1,200 and €800/1,000), New York street scenes with children by Helen Levitt from the 1940s (lot 63, € 6/8,000), later platinum prints by the American Pictorialist Karl Struss (lot 11, €5/6,000), the portfolio "Urformen der Kunst I" with posthumous pigment prints of Karl Blossfeldt (lot 12, €4,000) and a two-part Bauhaus portfolio with 20 prints of Bauhaus masterpieces of the 1920s, printed in 1984 and signed in part by the artists themselves or by their estate managers (lot 30, €10,000).
