Note From the Writer's Desk: |
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Feb. 26, Lenovo revealed new ThinkPad and ThinkBook tablet and laptop products, plus a wild idea for a transparent laptop screen. The ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept is just a proof of concept right now. It offers a 17.3-inch see-through Micro-LED display – an interesting entry in the see-through screen trend and a possible bridge between traditional computing and mixed reality. Other companies have boasted stylish see-through screens lately, particularly LG and Samsung with large, transparent TV demos at CES 2024. Lenovo’s new ThinkBook concept features a transparent keyboard and a much smaller screen than the LG and Samsung products. The transparent ThinkBook invites us to imagine how a transparent screen might benefit us at work. Lenovo says "Artificial Intelligence Generated Content" will enable "interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information to create unique user generated content." We’ll have to wait for a demo to see what that means, but the idea might be that virtual meetings could interact with real-world objects, allowing, perhaps, virtual attendees to easily make notes on each others' projects. If the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop does come to general availability, it might be a stepping stone toward the imagined AI-powered, app-less future in which computers and virtual spaces are controlled mostly through natural language prompts.
