I have to be home earlier than all my friends,” my teenage son, Jordan, said. “I’m seventeen years old, and I still have a curfew. Legally, I’m practically an adult.”

“You’re not an adult,” I said. “You’re still in high school.”

“None of my friends has a curfew. You don’t trust me.”

“It’s not about trust,” I said. “It’s about wanting what’s best for you. I love you, and I want to protect you.”

“Protect me from what? Having fun?”

I sighed. “Honey, we’ve talked about this before. As long as you live at home, there will be certain rules to follow. But those rules exist because I love you, not because I’m trying to control you.” (Keep reading)
