Let's Keep Winning.
As a participant in Antiwar.com since its early days reporting on the Bosnian and Serbian Wars, I know that the world can sometimes seem hopeless. The role-call of countries the US has actually bombed since our founding in 1995 is staggering: Serbia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia. Combined with our political interventions in Ukraine, Egypt, Georgia, Venezuela, and Bolivia, not to mention our dozens of "light footprint" bases in Africa, and progress seems impossible. But in fact we are finally seeing the positive impact of our years of work. With your contributions we can go even further.
The positive thing is the rise of powerful voices that echo what Antiwar.com has been saying for all this time-these endless wars must stop. Ron Paul has been followed by the more visible Rand Paul. Then Donald Trump emerged and his faction, skeptical of wars in the Middle East and hostility to Russia, has been partially successful in taking over the Republican Party. Now, the rise of Bernie Sanders and, most positively of all, Tulsi Gabbard, suggests that the Democratic Party is not completely lost to the Hillary Clinton warmongering corporatist faction.
The mere presence of Trump in office and Tulsi on the campaign trail has moved the "Overton Window". It is now acceptable to talk about withdrawing from the Middle East, not fighting wars with Iran and Russia, and reducing our commitment to NATO, or even withdrawing. These are policies we at Antiwar.com have been advocating since our founding and now many people see their wisdom. Even our recent court victory over the FBI shows that the deep state can be beaten. We must continue our work, continue to reinforce success. But our work requires resources; and these depend on your contributions.
Who are these Clintonite CIA neo-liberal imperialists? Post-Cold-War military-industrial complex (now mouthing slogans about climate change while polluting the Earth), the sycophantic establishment - now reinforced now by 24-hour cable "news" networks and the bureaucratic Deep State, comprised of current and former intelligence and defense officials. In addition, private equity firms and hedge funds with ideology supplied by international organizations, such as the World Bank and World Trade Organization, and associated "private" groups like the Atlantic Council, staffed with ex-CIA officials create formidable force. They dominate the permanent government in Washington, the media, and the establishments in both parties.
Consider the mind-bogglingly hysterical reactions in both parties and the media to a president who says "Let's work out peace with North Korea," "Let's get out of Afghanistan and Syria," "Iraq was a terrible mistake," and worst of all "Let's talk to the Russians." Unfortunately, on the rare occasion Trump announces a sensible, statesmanlike intention, he is attacked by his "betters" - and often he capitulates. Because the president is not himself an ideologue, he lacks the political and historical background to stay his instinctive course. If the forces of anti-imperialism and peace are to triumph, good instincts must be reinforced by outside voices; similarly, anti-interventionist forces in the Democratic Party, such as Bernie and Tulsi must also be supported.
We, together, can be a powerful force against the enemies of peace and freedom. Not a day goes by that I don't miss the eloquent columns (and, yes, the tweets and rants) of Justin Raimondo, our departed former Editorial Director. But we have new writers who have picked up the flag, and the old ones continue to fight. And you can provide us with the ammunition we need with your donation to our Fall fundraising drive. We have received a commitment to $32,000 in matching funds, which requires us to get $32,000 from you, our supporters. We, as we've said many, many times, are utterly reliant on our donors. We are a truly grassroots organization. So, please, water the grass today!
We can't do it without you. Please donate today!
Thank you for your support,
