One year ago today, we won a major victory …

Friend,

One year ago we celebrated when the Patriot Act expired. But lawmakers on both sides of the aisle want to revive it.

Surveillance doesn't make us any safer: This is especially true for communities of color, who are disproportionately spied on. Urge Congress to protect our privacy rights and stop the Patriot Act from becoming law again.

Thanks!

Lucia

Friend,

We’ve been fighting the Patriot Act, and the invasive spying powers built into it, for the better part of 6 years. One year ago today, we won a major victory: The Patriot Act expired, and despite Mitch McConnell’s and Nancy Pelosi’s efforts, Congress failed to reauthorize it.

Now, on March 15, 2021, we celebrate one year of the Patriot Act going dark by urging Congress to keep it that way. Join Free Press Action and our allies at Demand Progress and Fight for the Future for a live conversation about our efforts to stop the Patriot Act for good — and a look at what comes next in the fight to protect our privacy.

For decades, the government has abused the surveillance powers built into the Patriot Act and has spied on Muslim communities, journalists, racial-justice activists and hundreds of millions of people like you — without a warrant. The fact that the Patriot Act expired a year ago is a huge win for everyone in the United States who cares about privacy rights. But we need to ensure that Congress doesn’t revive this dangerous surveillance authority.

Tune into the livestream and join us in telling Congress: The Patriot Act isn’t necessary — let it stay expired.

Thanks for all you do,

Lucia and the rest of the Free Press Action team
