Good morning. Welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Wednesday, March 13. Welcome to NFL free agency! The league's period for signing veteran free agents officially begins at 3 p.m. today, but teams and players have been agreeing to deals since Monday during the legal tampering period, and the action, as always, has been fast and furious. Here's the lineup of stories we have for you today: Moving inWhile the rest of the NFL wheeled and dealed (yes, I know that's not a word.) during the first two days of unofficial free agency, the Saints largely sat idle and watched from the sideline. Then on Tuesday afternoon, they finally struck their first deal, reaching an agreement with a veteran linebacker. Matthew Paras has the story on the newest Saints addition, someone with regional ties and a pair of Super Bowl rings on his resume. Moving onThere were some departures, though... • Veteran quarterback James Winston is headed to Cleveland after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Browns on Tuesday. • Columnist Rod Walker opines that Winston embraced New Orleans during his time here and will be missed in the Saints locker room, where he was regarded as one of the team's most popular players by teammates. • Defensive tackle Malcolm Roach agreed to a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos, where he'll reunite with former Saints coach Sean Payton and a host of other old teammates and coaches. • Linebacker Zack Baun is headed to Philadelphia to play for the Eagles. Baun, a 2020 third-round pick from Wisconsin, was an underrated role player for the Saints. That's it for today. We'll have more news and analysis as free agency continues throughout the week. Until next time, have a great day. Cheers, Jeff Duncan |
