It's been 20 years since the worst terrorist attack against the United States was carried out on our own soil.
September 11, 2001 forever changed the trajectory of our nation. For a brief moment, we were united as a people. Politics didn't matter. All that mattered was picking up the pieces and moving ahead as a country.
We honored those who lost their lives that day. Regular people simply going about their business were slaughtered for no good reason. It didn't matter their skin color, gender, religious affiliation, or political beliefs — they were people killed by reckless hate because of the country they lived in.
And as I remember back to that fateful day, I can't help but think about Flight 93 and how passengers banded together and prevented the plane from hitting its intended target.
Looking back on that, I often ask myself, "Would I rush the cockpit?" It's a fair question that all of us should ponder. And with America as divided as it is today, would any of us be willing to risk our lives to save our fellow Americans?
May we never forget the tragedy that shook America to its core that September day. And may we always remember the unity it fostered in every American. Let us strive for that unity once again.
