Good afternoon Voornaam, It's been an odd week. It started with a BBC scandal but will end with questions about whether that saga was even a story, let alone something more serious. From the few facts we have it appears there is more than an element of tragedy about Huw Edwards' position. Whether there is anything more to it may, in time, emerge.
In the meantime we have only questions - about The Sun's reporting, about the BBC's response, about Edwards himself, and his recovery - we hope - from the mental health issues which have seen him hospitalised. While all that was raging, there was plenty more going on. Here are a few things you might have missed amid all the noise... - Scotland's political journalist of the year, Conor Matchett, brought in another exclusive that won a lot of attention on our site and, later, elsewhere: he revealed that ministers had broken transparency rules by failing to publish analysis around how long it might take an independent Scotland to join the EU. - Joyce McMillan offers a typically powerful read today, decrying an economic system which she sees as loving money, not humanity. - John McLellan's column on the appointment of Ruth Davidson as a non-executive director of Scottish Rugby was a popular read: he wondered why her appointment provoked an outcry that appointments of ex-SNP MSPs did not.
- Laura Waddell reflected on whether Twitter, Threads and other similar social media platforms are really the best, most healthy places for public debate - or even government communication and the mainstream media. Hers is a thoughtful read about a complex world. - Alexander Brown's dispatch from Westminster on the SNP group's reaction to Mhairi Black's decision to stand down at the next election also won a big audience: David Lindon admitted some of his colleagues needed "picking up off the floor" after the news broke. - David Barnes' reflection on Stuart Hogg, the brilliant Scotland rugby international who also decided to call it a day, concluded that "Hogg should be recognised as one of the all-time greats of the Scottish game".
